7 Summer Essentials
With summer upon us it’s time to get prepared. Tis the season of sunshine, parties and time-off! All of that can be a little chaotic, and sometimes our health comes second fiddle to having a good time. That is all part of life, and it is important to remain calm and balanced as you enjoy your end of year. Exercising where you can, perhaps even making it a social occasion outdoors, choosing wisely off the menu and not being afraid to be particular with your meal order, always ensuring one meal is prepared at home a day, drinking a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage, and going for a walk along the beach instead of simply laying out, are simple ideas to incorporate into your summer. This list of summer essentials will also help to keep you on track, and serves as a great “what to pack” guide for beach days or picnics.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated! Whether it be in your handbag or beach bag, or simply on your desk, having a stainless steel water bottle keeps your water cool and helps you track your daily water intake. This is critical as undoubtedly, there is a lot of alcohol being consumed at this time of year! Keep your energy up, hunger at bay and skin plump by committing to 2-3L daily.
Your skin is your largest organ - what you apply to it gets absorbed into your bloodstream. There is conflicting information regarding the safety of Oxybenzone, Benzophenone, Disodium EDTA, Padimate O, so I would avoid these ingredients at all costs. Choose a sunscreen that contains either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as an active ingredient, as these are the natural ingredients (not chemicals!) that act as a barrier between your skin and the sun’s UV rays. You should also avoid sunscreens that contain vitamin A, as whilst an antioxidant, it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun. I love this one for my face (feels so good!) and this one for the body. Don’t forget your lips!
Aloe vera is known to promote skin health and healing, particularly useful after sunburn. The gel can also be used to soothe insect bites as well as allergic reactions. This particular brand has few ingredients, one of which is rosewater, another hydrating and nourishing ingredient.
High temperatures, beach days and the active season all have one thing in common- sweat! One of the reasons to opt for natural deodorants is to avoid aluminium, a known neurotoxin found in conventional deodorants, being drawn into our sweat ducts to clog them. This one is not only effective at reducing body odor, it utilises natural ingredients such as coconut oil, arrowroot and baking soda to keep you fresh, without harmful or skin-irritating ingredients.
Good skin is in! And there is nothing nicer than a glowy complexion. Get the glow from the inside out with good, cleansing food and loads of water, but allow yourself a little help with a hint of highlighter on your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, above your lip and along your collarbones!
Seeing a pattern here?! Hydration, hydration, hydration! Sun, salt water and air-con make it essential during this time of year. Before an event, after a big night out, or post beach day, having one of these sheet masks on hand will give your skin the little pep it needs. It’s very soothing, quick and easy. Top tip: I like to keep the residue on my face and massage it in and down my neck and decolletage.
