Healthy Spotlight: Sam, The Priti Yogi

Today we are so excited to share with the Sprout Community, Sam also known as @thepritiyogi. Sam is a very inspiring yoga teacher and vegan foodie who inspires others to live a healthy, cruelty free life.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My names Sam, I’m a Vegan Yogi/Yoga teacher living in Brisbane with my partner and my toy poodle, I love animals, I have been living a vegan lifestyle for about 4 years and have never felt better. I love reading books if you follow me on Instagram you would probably know one of my favourite books is The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, I love eating fresh food, being outdoors, and of course yoga!

When did you first start practising yoga and how did you stay motivated in your practice?

I started yoga in mid 2015, I was extremely inflexible and suffered from stress and anxiety so I started stretching and practicing yoga from home. Staying motivated wasn’t easy to begin with, I had that little voice in my head telling me yoga was only for flexible people but I stuck it out because I knew it was good for me and after a short period of time I started to feel the benefits in my body and mind, after this there was no turning back because I now knew how my body should feel and Yoga makes me happy so naturally I want to do what makes me feel happy.

What is your favourite yoga pose?

Hmm.. that’s a tough one, I have lots that I love for different reasons but if I had to name just one it would probably be Halasana (Plow Pose).

How did you get into teaching yoga and where can people find your classes?

I fell in love with yoga almost straight away, I had never really had anything I was this passionate about so i just knew that this was it, this is what I want to do, it has done so much for me and I want to help others experience the amazing benefits of yoga.

I currently teach private classes in Brisbane & Gold Coast and I teach a group class every Wednesday at Waterford West, anyone interested feel free to email me for more details via thepritiyogi@gmail.com I also have a Yoga E Guide coming out soon so keep an eye out for that ; )

Do you have any tips for those just starting out in their yoga journey, where to start, etc?

Try different styles of yoga until you find what feels right for you. Set aside a small area in the house for your yoga space, somewhere you can always leave your mat. Wake up early at the same time each day so it starts to become part of your daily routine and waking up early can avoid the chance of being interrupted by others in the house.  Remember to Breath! This is the most important part and Practice, Practice, Practice!

What is your favourite quick nourishing meal?

Hands down it would have to be Choc Banana Nice Cream with chopped fruit, seeds and cacao nibs sprinkled on top.

What lead you to a vegan diet?

The animals! My whole life I had been consuming animal products because it was considered normal, I was conditioned by the society I grew up in to think it was ok, but it wasn’t. The reality of the whole idea of eating another living being smacked me in the face and I could no longer continue consuming animal products. There is so much information available to us online now, I believe if more people did some research into this they would choose a vegan lifestyle as well.

Do you have any tips for those who want to live a healthier lifestyle?

Get into a routine, wake up early, get active first thing in the morning, this is the best way to kick start your day and will make you want to eat healthy for the rest of the day. I think of it like this, use it or lose it! So basically if you don’t keep moving your body it won’t keep going. Think of food as fuel if you feed your body crappy unhealthy food it will make you feel sluggish and weigh you down but if you eat fresh healthy food you will feel energised and alive and therefore you will be more motivated to exercise as well.. win, win. My 97 year old great grandfather who still does 3kms on the treadmill every day says the secret to a long happy life is good food and exercise, this definitely inspires me.
